The Court of Appeal (CoA) constitutes the second-instance court of the Republic and deals with appeals against decisions of any other court, other than the Supreme Constitutional Court and the Supreme Court.

The CoA is composed of no more than 16 Judges. CoA Judges are appointed by the Supreme Council of Judicature which also determines the Court’s President.

The President of the CoA takes precedence over the rest of the Judges and exercises administrative duties.

The CoA may sit in Divisions of Civil, Criminal and Revisional jurisdiction. The Court’s Civil jurisdiction includes the jurisdiction of the Courts of Specialised Jurisdiction. The CoA’s jurisdiction, competences and powers are all exercised by the aforesaid Divisions.

The President of the CoA may, with the approval of the Supreme Court, distribute and allocate work to the CoA members, determine the composition of each Division, assign the President of each Division and entrust, on each Division, the exercise of the CoA’s second-instance jurisdiction, viz the Civil, Criminal and Revisional jurisdiction.
